All light bulbs go dimmer with age called lumen depreciation. LED lifetime is measured as ‘B50/L70’ meaning 50% of the lights installed will have an output of less than 70%. Although LED can last a long time it gets dimmer and dimmer with age. Another overlooked factor is the accumulation of dirt and dust onto light lenses over time. The lumen depreciation here averages 15% of the original light output over 3-5 years regardless of the technology. A simple wash clean effectively resolves this problem.

Although it may seem obvious, extended product guarantees do not actually reduce your overall running costs. In contract they increase the real upfront cost of the LED product, bind you to a fixed technology for a long period of time, and thus reduce your ability to take advantage of latest technology such as improved energy efficiency and smart lighting. It is simply more efficient and effective to maintain your lighting system as an ongoing concern, ideally at a fixed monthly cost, rather than invest in the capital ownership of a fixed technology over a long period of time.

It must be remembered that your lighting system is employed to consistently deliver an attractively bright shopping environment for your customers. This is best achieved via a regular monthly pro-active store inspection combined with a complete wash/clean and group re-lamp every 3-5 years. This will also ensure you keep abreast with latest technology. It will also cost you less than investing in capital expenditure projects with extended guarantees every 5-7 years.
